USB 2.0 PCMCIA Cardbus
Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with an Intel Celeron 1.2 gHz with three usb 1.1 ports, and I'm running XP Home SP2. I have a 40 gb external maxtor hd that is 2.0 compliant so I bought a SIIG 4-port powered usb 2.0 pcmcia cardbus. It has an NEC chipset I believe, and I installed everything according to the manual. When I plug usb 1.1 things into it, it runs fine. When I plug my external hd that is usb 2. 0, after a few minutes it shuts my computer off. Before it shuts off I can use it just fine, and the hd also works when I plug it into the existing usb 1.1 ports on the back of my laptop. How can I fix this?

What does the event log have to say?
-
The event log doesn't say anything about this.
-
sounds like it may be pulling too much power through the pcmcia card - does the drive have an external powersupply?
-
yes, the drive is a maxtor 3000LE and it has and external power supply.
-
and are you using the external powersupply when this happens?
Can you elaborate more about the "computer shuts off" - is there any message? blue screen? does it reboot?
-
I'm using the external powersupply for both the hard drive and the pcmcia card at the same time. When the computer shuts off, there is no message, no blue screen, the computer is not hot at all, and it does not reboot, it just powers off. And it does not power off immediately, it powers off after 10-15 minutes or so.

Does rather sound like it's the bios shutting the lappie down then.
-
Alright, so what does that mean and what do I do to fix it?

get a better quality pcmcia card.
