Did you try setting EnablePrefetcher to 2?
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...dded.5%29.aspx
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters
Name: EnablePrefetcher
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0
The EnablePrefetcher key can have one of the following values:
0 = Disabled
1 = Application launch prefetching enabled
2 = Boot prefetching enabled
3 = Application launch and boot enabled

i've read this info before.. i understand what '0' obviously means. but what do 1,2,and 3 mean?

1 -> applications that you open are used by prefetch
2-> Windows apps etc that launch during bootup are used by prefetch (apps like windows themes)
3-> both of the above
Why did you disable prefetch? Its generally considered a good thing
The Prefetcher is a component of versions of Microsoft Windows starting with Windows XP. [1] It is a component of the Memory Manager that speeds up the Windows boot process, and shortens the amount of time it takes to start up programs. In Windows Vista, SuperFetch and ReadyBoost [2] extend upon the prefetcher and attempt to accelerate application and boot launch times respectively by monitoring and adapting to usage patterns over periods of time and loading the majority of the files and data needed by them into memory so that they can be accessed very quickly when needed.

Why on earth would you want to disable prefetch, it's a significant optimization in XP, and will also cripple boot file optimization on the hard drive.
Edit: Steve posted much the same thought while I was typing...

hi steve and platypus.. i read somewhere that disabling prefetch would increase boot speed. but if you dont suggest this, i'll return all prefetch values to '0' in the registry.
!!!IMPORTANT!!! within the Prefetch folder, i created a subfolder called 'x'. and i moved many of the prefetch files to this folder. i did this thinking it would cut down boot time. now, when i try to move them back to the Prefetch folder, i get a warning saying "Acess is denied"
i then tried to change the attribute of this subfolder by unticking 'Read Only'. but when i try again to move the contents of this subfolder to the Prefetch folder, i still get the "Acess is denied" message and i'm unable to move files. what do i do?
---- EDIT ----
i managed to fix the above problem by setting permissions to administrator (me). thus, i was able to move all the files back to the prefetch folder.
one question... whats the best value to set in the prefetch registry to boot up faster? 1, 2 or 3?

Don't worry about moving anything back. The items will automatically get replaced as you re-boot and run different apps.

hi dude.. when you delete the prefetch folder, do you also modify the prefetch value in the registry?
