all dead..
Need help with this one, the power is on and that is all and the machine will not shut down ie. have to use the wall plug. There is nothing on the screen.
She just spins up and that is about it. A celeron 500 ab- bh6 mainboard. Basically where can i start.! I suppose romove everything and test one at a time.

Check the power supply connection to the motherboard first, if that seems OK check the power supply. If the PSU is OK, then check the motherboard. Does the system beep when you start it?
-
no beeping - just the green light.
psu seems fine.
-
Are the jumpers for the memory set correctly?

Is this a new machine (just built) ....or is it one that "has stopped working" ?
if its a new machine, it could be something so simple as a floppy lead on back to front.
give us a clue?

Also if it's a new machine, check the clear CMOS jumper. PC-Chips boards sometimes ship with the clear CMOS jumper set to clear instead of normal operation.

thanks , she is a couple of years old, working fine till the other day when the system stopped responding. The screen went blank and had to be turned off from the wall.

ok now establihed ,old machine.
it could be a combination of several parts, failing.
take the board out of the case and stand it on a "yellow pages" beg/vorrow/steal a new PSU , remove all card except video, take out memory , blow/wipe clean contacts and replace one (if DIMM) try that...if ATX u will have to short 2 pins marked power (for a second) if no try another dimm ,,,if no try new vid card ,,,if no try new CPU ,,,,if no return to top of page and buy a new m/board.
it is a job of substitution ,,,,handy if u have a spare machine ,,,,,caution on swopping CPUs (different voltages etc)
good luck freddy
